La Perdrix

n La Perdrix it was lovely to spend time on the potter wheel. I had 1 induction before so it was good to experience that more depth and have lots of practice. It was interesting to see the different way the tutors took the wheel. I found it hard to grasp but we were using the heavy grained clay and it was a bit more difficult to turn, next time I would use terracotta or some sort of softer clay. After much practice I made a bowl all on my own, it was a little wonky but it was nice to see it glazed and ready to be served on a table. When glazing I used the wild poppies in the garden as inspiration, I used under glaze then added clear glaze on the top then it went into the raku firing.

 

Raku firing was something I had never done before so it was exciting to see and create some really lovely outcomes. For our table settings we had to glaze all the work and fire it that morning, we had a chance to do some tests and see what sorts of glazes and techniques to use on the final place setting.

Here was our final products on the night, it was great to see the final table setting and actually being able to eat off something you made a few days ago I found to be amazing. It inspired me to make all my plates and bowls at home.

 

Rob Ryan Research

Rob Ryan was born in 1962, in Cyprus, he studied fine art, and specialised in printmaking. His working often consists of whimsical figures paired with sentimental, grave, honest and occasionally humorous pieces of writing which he admits one autobiographical, he works in London, UK.

I find Rob Ryan inspiring and I have used his technique in my work because I really love the intrecate detail and the way he uses the missing sections as highlights. I am inspired by his use of shape and the way he can carve out small detail and use the missing pieces for a form of light source which is what I want to be doing.

La perdrix

Last week I went on a trip to La Perdrix in France, for a cultural and creative week. Here are some photographs of my work and the surrounding area. It was a very beautiful area and I went on to develop lots of knowledge with the ceramic materials and techniques. We were given two projects when we were over there and they were fun to do and the outcomes were great.

The first project was to create a table setting using inspiration from an artist in groups. In my group there was Alice, Gemma and Sarah.

We all had to create:-Canapé dish-Shot glass-drinking vessel-wine glass-starter dish-Mains Dish-Dessert dish- Also we had to cook the mains on the night relating to the artists inspiration. We all decided to look at Georgia O’Keeffe work as she was interesting to look at because of the combination of close up flowers and skulls with various shapes and colours. We started to draw out some possible ideas.

   

We were interested in the organic forms and the contrasting colours. For the first day we had to make some samples of what the end product could look like and here was my sample of what the drinking vessel could look like. Using clay I made a pinch pot and added skull like features on to the side of the vessel, I also added a spout on the back so it could make it easy pouring.

  

Continuation of Paper house making

ere are some more card models I have been creating during the Easter break. I have made seven in total and I hope to make around 12 so I could create a numerical circle. I used the clock as the idea of being a perfect round and with 12 hours in total, If this doesn’t work out I can hopefully make more or take some out depending on size and how they all fit together. The more houses I make the more I am getting used to the card and the average sizes and shapes. I am enjoying recreating the houses in my local area and seeing them come to life from the card and along to my desk is quite remarkable. I have stuck with the theme of only cutting out door/windows and emphasising on the window/door frames, this in a way doesn’t make the piece to detailed and takes the emphasis out of the circular star constellations on the back.

Final Group Outcome

Here is our final stained glass sample on perspex painted with glass paints. We needed to water down the glass paints to make the coats thinner and more transparent. The outcome looks really good and as a group we are all really pleased with it. We used Moriam’s drawings and simply painted over the top to make sure we included all the necessary elements. Here are the results through photographs.

          

Card houses based around Pontyclun

Using the imagery and visual experience I have gathered from the places around Pontyclun I have started to make the buildings out of card, here are some of the results. The first building I looked at was the local pub. I was interested in the features on the bottom panes of the windows. I recreated this in card and emphasised the interesting façade by adding the layer of card and stuck it together with sticky backed foam, which is handy to bring layers on the building.

   

Next I looked at the converted church to now Giles gallery building. This was a very interesting building because of the history of the building being a church and I was very pleased with the outcome.
